Job Description

Application Developers, or Programmers, help create and improve software applications for businesses. They write the code needed for these applications to work and spend time testing or debugging the program.

Back-end web developers, or web application developers, focus on coding and making sure websites work properly. They often require more technical skills and can command much higher salaries than a front-end developer, which is more focused on look and feel of the website.

Getting a Job

A bachelor's degree in Computer Science is often required for a programming job, but that isn't always enough. Many companies want to see experience or examples of coding.

Without a bachelor's degree, potential employees would have to show examples of applications developed to get into a programmer job, or perhaps get into IT somehow and then get promoted or transfered into a programming job. Many IT workers are asked to develop programming skills, even if they are not full time programmers.
