Job Description

Web developers create web pages by using coding languages such as HTML and Javascript. Depending on the organization, they may be responsible for creating the graphics and layout of a site, although often times an organization would have a separate graphics or UX expert.

They can perform more advanced back-end duties as well, although back-end developers are often considered Programmers and are explained in the Programmer career summary.

Sometimes web developer positions are part of the marketing department, but often times all web related jobs, except content creation, fall under the IT umbrella.

Getting a Job

A bachelor's degree in Computer Science or Graphic Design may be required. Many companies just want to hire talent. If you can create websites and have a portfolio, that alone could be enough to get hired. Employers would just want to make sure you know what you are doing.

Getting a Promotion

Learning to code and learning to perform back-end duties can lead to a raise or promotion.
