Job Description

Information Security Analysts help protect an organization's data. A Security Analyst may be asked to understand wide ranging security principles, including viruses and other malware, web and mobile application security, database security, networking security, disaster recovery, risk management, and encryption.

This shows why it's so hard for companies to find enough qualified workers. While IT workers in these various different areas should understand security for their particular areas, many do not.

A Security Specialist may have expertise in a certain area, like network security or application security.

Getting a Job

There is a huge demand for information security professionals. There aren't enough qualified workers to fill all open positions. Because of this, salaries are expected to increase.

Having certifications and a trustworthy reputation can help you land a job. For some companies, experience may be required. A typical path could be to start at a help desk, then use a certification to get a promotion. Since there is such a shortage of qualified security professionals, you may be able to jump right into a junior security position with certifications and a good education.

Getting a Promotion

Since Security Analysts have a good well-rounded knowledge of IT and since security is an important part of almost any IT job, they are in a great position for a promotion. If they remain in Information Security, they may be required to obtain more advanced security certifications to qualify for a promotion.
